Working with existing buildings is a learning process. Especially with older properties that have been re-worked in the past. This particular mews house had seen many iterations, originally a stables, then converted with reinforced concrete structure to a house and in this project a new basement level under the entire house has been added along with a new storey on top. To make the best use of the additional space and to maximise the natural light, the house has been entirely remodelled.
The progress photos above show the upper floor under construction with a temporary roof, scaffold and winch along with images showing the temporary basement props and waterproof concrete control samples. The major challenge, apart from adding two storeys on a landlocked site with no rear or front garden (!) was in managing the numerous Party Walls, obtaining licenses from Grosvenor Estate and satisfying their requirements through out construction along with those of Westminster City Council.
